Mergers & Acquisitions profiles the top 28 investment banks of 2018, with KPMG, Houlihan Lokey, Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS), William Blair and Lincoln International ranking as the five most active in M&A. The list is based on volume of completed deals, with PitchBook as the data provider. It was a good year for dealmaking, with activity in the U.S. middle market exceeding $400 billion, the first year to achieve the milestone.

Technology focused private equity firm Siris Capital Group has raised its fourth fund at $3.45 billion. The fund is almost double the $1.8 billion New York-based Siris last raised in 2015. Siris has been active recently. The firm purchased for $2 billion; announced plans to buy Travelport for $4.4 billion; and sold Polycom to Plantronics for $2 billion. “While the technology sector has become increasingly competitive for attractive high growth assets, we continue to have strong conviction in our strategy of acquiring mature technology companies and driving value creation,” says Siris co-founder Frank Baker. Siris’ placement agent was Park Hill Group, while Kirkland & Ellis provided legal advice.

Technology M&A is thriving, and private equity firms are hot on the trail of innovations that will drive sustainable value to customers and make companies more efficient, more effective and less expensive to run. Among the developments appealing to PE investors are: artificial intelligence, data management, data virtualization, digital marketing, healthcare IT, industrial automation, the Internet of Things, machine-to-machine learning, payment processing and Software-as-a-Service. Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan has acquired a stake in vehicle technology company Fleet Complete from Madison Dearborn Partners. Advisors to the sellers include: Lazard, Barclays and Kirkland & Ellis. Torys LLP represented OTPP.

Vance Street Capital LLC has acquired Measurand Group, a manufacturer of geotechnical instrumentation used to monitor the deformation of soil and structures. Advisors to Vance Street include: Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP and O’Melveny & Myers LLP. Connors Stilwell advised Measurand. BMO provided financing.

Exponent Private Equity-backed Dennis Publishing has bought business publication company Kiplinger Washington Editors. Oaklins DeSilva+Phillips advised the buyer.

Sentinel Captial Partners has sold CINgroup, a provider of bankruptcy software and due diligence services.

Independent sponsors must rely on others for the capital to close deals.
