Varian Medical Systems Inc. (NYSE: VAR) is buying software assets from Velocity Medical Solutions LLC.

Atlanta-based Velocity develops specialized software for cancer clinics. The acquisition includes a program that aims to show a complete view of patient treatment history through information gathering. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Varian, headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif., manufactures medical devices and develops software for treating cancer and other medical conditions. The company supplies software for managing cancer clinics, radiotherapy centers and medical oncology practices. The company also supplies tubes and digital detectors for x-ray imaging.

The software is used at more than 200 cancer treatment centers. Varian expects to use its sales and support network to more quickly and deeply penetrate the market for the Velocity software.

Other recent health care deals include GSI Group Inc.'s (Nasdaq: GSI) acquisition of Jadak Technologies Inc. in February, and Interactive Health's purchase of Health Solutions.
