The total of $520 billion in announced domestic M&A succeeded in putting the third quarter of 2000 third on the list of all-time highest transaction volume. European buyers accounted for a record 24% of that, or $124 billion, according to Thomson Financial Securities Data. Abroad, the pace slackened considerably from the year-prior period, down to $272 billion from $448.7 billion. Latin American activity dropped to its lowest level since 1997, and European M&A declined for the third consecutive quarter.
