Barclays Capital – The firm, the investment banking division of Barclays PLC, announced the appointment of Robert C. Griffin as managing director and head of investment banking for the Americas. Bear Stearns & Co. Inc. – Ilan Kaufthal has joined the firm as senior managing director and vice chairman of its investment banking division. He previously had been vice chairman and head of m&a at Schroder & Co. Inc. W.P. Carey & Co. Inc. – W. Sean Sovak and Gordon J. Whiting have been elected as executive directors by the company’s board. Whiting will retain his title as deputy director of acquisitions. Sovak, who had been a first VP, has also been an active member of the company’s acquisitions team. W.P. Carey is a real estate investment banking firm. Chase Manhattan Corp. – Robert Kindler was named a managing director of the firm. He had been a partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Additionally, Michael Defelice and Lisa Price have joined the m&a group at Chase Securities as managing directors. Defelice will work in Chase H&Q’s technology m&a group in San Francisco for one year then will return to New York. He had spent the past seven years at Merrill Lynch in the m&a department. Price, based in New York, will focus on media and new media opportunities. She had been at Bear Stearns for the past eight years, covering the media, technology, and aerospace and defense industries. Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin – William H. “Tuck” Hardie has joined this investment bank as a VP in its New York office. He provides m&a and financial restructuring advice. He had been EVP of business affairs and general counsel at Marvel Enterprises Inc., where he managed all aspects of the company’s m&a efforts. In other Houlihan personnel changes, James K. Davis and Barbara W. Wilson were named directors in Dallas and San Francisco, respectively, while Chris DiMauro was named a VP in Los Angeles. Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue – Lyle Ganske has been named chair of the 222-lawyer m&a practice at the law firm. Most recently, he chaired the firm’s corporate counseling practice and headed its U.S. m&a practice. In his new position he leads both U.S. and international m&a activities. KPMG LLP – The accounting, tax, and consulting firm named Thomas Wessel as a partner in its Tax Mergers & Acquisitions group. He is headquartered in the firm’s Washington National Tax practice. U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray – Robert Dana has joined the firm as a managing director in the communications and computing group. Previously, he was a director at Credit Suisse First Boston, where he oversaw numerous m&a transactions.
