Telenovelas (Latin American-formatted soap operas) are steamy and melodramatic, but consolidation among the genre’s distributors and producers is much cooler, said executives in the space. Maria Parkerson, chief European regional officer for Miami-based telenovela distributor Tepuy International, said M&A is scarce because players have close ties to broadcasters in the nations where they operate. “With the exception of Tepuy, all distributors are directly related to a broadcaster in their country of origin,” she said. “The broadcasters also generate original content, sometimes in co-production with local production companies but mostly independently. So it is almost a given that these distributors would not merge or buy each other out.”
