SpeedCast Ltd. has acquired Pactel International, a satellite communications provider.

Sydney-based Pactel provides satellite communications services, including Internet and voice services, to oil and gas operators, telecommunications companies, governments and multinational mining companies in Australia and throughout the Pacific.

The deal allows Hong Kong-based SpeedCast to expand in the Asia-Pacific region. The buyer is owned by private equity firm TA Associates, which bought it in September 2012. TA Associates has already added Australian Satellite Communications, in December, and Elektrikom Satellite Service in January, to SpeedCast.

TA Associates, headquartered in Boston, has invested in more than 425 companies since it was founded in 1968. The firm sold Alma Lasers for $220 million to Fosun International in May.

In January, the firm bought Dutch LLC, which owns fashion brands Joie, Equipment and Current/Elliot. In December, TA Associates made a majority investment in DigiCert Inc., a security services company.
