As the pace of M&A dealmaking has slowed to a crawl over the first half of 2001, the volume of M&A-related syndicated loan issuance dropped off as well, and sources expect the M&A slump to continue for the rest of the year. According to statistics from Thomson Financial the total volume of syndicated loan issuance for M&A purposes in the first half of 2001 was approximately $95 billion, versus $121 billion for the same time period last year. In other words, syndicated loan issuance for M&A deals fell nearly 22%. However, overall first-half syndicated loan issuance for 2001 rose by 5.6%, further shrinking the piece M&A contributed to the syndicated loan market.
