Private equity-backed AxelaCare Health Solutions has acquired Ambient Healthcare to expand its home intravenous therapy network, as health care providers continue to expand into home care.
Ambient Healthcare, headquartered in Davie, Florida, provides intravenous therapies and nursing care in the southeastern U.S. The company provides antibiotics, hydration, antiemetic, nutrition, inotropes and other therapies, delivered through nurses. Ambient also operates 16 infusion pharmacy locations in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
AxelaCare, headquartered in Lenexa, Kansas, provides specialized immune globulin therapy and other home infusion therapies. The company also developed an electronic patient outcomes assessment technology called CareExchange, and owns infusion pharmacies. The acquisition of Ambient expands AxelaCare's intravenous therapy services beyond the New York-New Jersey metro area into the southeast, and gives the company 34 infusion pharmacies.
The buyer is backed by Harvest Partners LP, a New York private equity firm that focuses on middle-market business services, industrial services, manufacturing , health care, energy and consumer products companies in North America. Harvest closed the deal for AxelaCare in April 2013.
AxelaCare has made other acquisitions. In October, the company bought New York-based Advanced Care, which also provides home-based intravenous therapy.
Many other health care companies are also expanding in the home care space. In November, HealthSouth Corp. (NYSE: HLS) agreed to pay $750 million for the owner of Encompass Home Health and Hospice, a Dallas-based home health service provider. In September, Nautic Partners bought All Metro Health Care Services, which provides home and community-based care in New York, New Jersey and Florida.
