The ACG board of directors, comprised of officers, committee vice chairmen, and chapter representative directors, took office January 1, 2006. Under the leadership of Chairman Patrick Hurley and President and CEO Dan Varroney, who assumed his new role in June 2005, the board meets by teleconference and in person four times a year. By design, the new board reflects the diversity of ACG, with 20 large and small chapters represented. The following briefly profiles each board member who will assume his or her respective post for a year. T. Patrick Hurley Jr. – ACG Philadelphia ACG Chairman Managing Director, MidMarket Capital Advisors LLC Patrick Hurley is the founder of MidMarket Capital Advisors, an outgrowth of the firm he and his partners sold to FleetBoston in 2000. MidMarket has affiliates in Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai, as China is an important focus of the firm. He says, “I’ve learned a great deal from Peter Coffey’s leadership this past year and look forward to working with Dan Varroney and the rest of the board this coming year.” Daniel A. Varroney ACG President and CEO Association for Corporate Growth Since Dan Varroney became President and CEO last June, ACG has received unprecedented media attention, 10% membership growth, and significant revenue growth, and key new initiatives have been launched to support chapters and members. Employed by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) for 23 years prior to joining ACG, he most recently served as SVP of NAM’s Field & National divisions. Key responsibilities included overseeing the association’s outside-Washington grassroots programs, recruiting leaders to NAM’s board, and maintaining NAM’s dues revenue base and revenue growth with member companies throughout the United States. He led a national team of 54 staff with $23 million in revenues. Paul Stewart – ACG Wisconsin ACG Chairman-Elect Principal, PS Capital Partners LLC Paul Stewart has more than 20 years of experience in a wide range of private equity investing – from venture capital to LBOs and recaps. The founder of PS Capital, he serves on the board of each of its four portfolio companies. He also serves on the boards of H&K Partners, Medical College of Wisconsin Research Foundation, and ACG Wisconsin. For the last two years he has served as ACG Vice Chairman of Chapter Support. Stewart serves as a board adviser and was interim CEO for Xymox Technologies, and had been a partner at Horizon Partners. Before that, he was a VP in the venture capital subsidiary of Republic Bank, subsequently acquired by NationsBank (now Bank of America). He also is an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Peter Coffey – ACG Wisconsin ACG Immediate Past Chairman Partner, Michael Best & Friedrich LLP Peter Coffey is a business lawyer who specializes in financing and the acquisition and sale of businesses. Chambers, America’s Leading Lawyers for Business comments, “Peter Coffey impresses with his measured and eminently sensible counsel in the field of corporate governance, management buyouts, and pre-merger activity, whether hostile or uncontested.” He counsels individuals and corporate clients in strategic alliances, technology licensing, distribution arrangements, executive compensation, and family succession. He chaired the 2002 ACG InterGrowth Conference and has served as President of ACG Wisconsin. He is an adjunct professor of law at Marquette University Law School; served as chair of the Visiting Nurses Association of Wisconsin; and serves on several corporate boards. Harris Smith, CPA – ACG Los Angeles Chairman of Finance West Region Managing Partner, Grant Thornton LLP Harris Smith oversees nine of Grant Thornton’s offices in the western United States. and is a member of the firm’s senior leadership team. With more than 25 years of experience, he has served clients ranging from large owner-managed organizations to publicly traded, multinational corporations. Harris has served as President of ACG San Francisco, including additional roles as chair of many committees. As finance chair, he serves on the ACG executive committee. Stephen A. Ferrara, CPA – ACG Chicago Vice Chairman of Finance Central Managing Partner, Assurance Services, BDO Seidman LLP Steve Ferrara has more than 20 years of diversified business experience working in public accounting and in industry as a CFO. He works with many public companies, offering assistance with a variety of merger activities and IPOs and has served as an adviser for companies on M&A and divestitures. James T. Easterling – ACG Chicago General Counsel Senior Partner, Ungaretti & Harris LLP Jim Easterling has served as ACG’s general counsel for more than 25 years. He has a diverse corporate and securities practice that includes business formation, M&A and divestitures, reorganizations and restructurings, public and private securities offerings, and regulatory compliance. Beverly W. Landstreet IV – ACG New York Chairman, ACG InterGrowth in 2006 Managing Director, KPMG LLP Bev Landstreet is responsible for marketing KPMG’s transaction services to U.S. private equity firms. He has more than 16 years of investment banking experience in all areas of finance, from private placements to public offerings, and has worked on a number of large and small deals, both friendly and hostile acquisitions of public and private companies. He has participated for three years on the committee heading the ACG New York Capital Connection & Wine Tasting Event, has served on the ACG InterGrowth committee equally long. Jeri J. Harman – ACG Los Angeles Chairman, ACG InterGrowth in 2007 Managing Director, Allied Capital Jeri Harman, head of Allied Capital’s Los Angeles office and member of the investment and management committees, has more than 20 years of financing experience. Before that she was head of American Capital’s Los Angeles office. Previously, she worked for First Security Van Kasper, Coopers & Lybrand, and in senior-level posts at Prudential Insurance Co. of America. She is a past president of ACG Los Angeles, co-chair of the ACG Los Angeles Business Conference, a speaker for TEC Worldwide, and was named Woman Dealmaker of the Year by The M&A Advisor. Robert N. Rubin – ACG National Capital Chairman, Membership & Chapter Support Managing Director and Senior Adviser, National Capital Cos. Rob Rubin’s efforts are focused primarily on representation of sell-side engagements for privately held, mid-market federal IT and professional services, software, and commercial IT services firms. For more than 25 years he has provided M&A and corporate finance advisory services to a variety of Fortune 100 firms. He is a licensed CPA and has Series 7 and 63 licenses from the NASD. He is a founder, past president, and longtime board member of ACG National Capital David Cohn – ACG Los Angeles Vice Chairman, Intermediaries Managing Director, Mosaic Capital LLC With 30-plus years in investment banking and corporate ownership, David Cohn most recently co-founded Mosaic Capital, and before that Angeles Capital Group and Berman Cohn. Shew – ACG Cleveland Vice Chairman, Corporate Member Affairs Managing Director of Business Development, FirstEnergy Corp. Cathy Shew is involved in M&A, divestitures, and corporate strategy at FirstEnergy, the nation’s fifth largest investor-owned electric system. Before joining FirstEnergy, she held various positions in finance, strategic planning, and marketing in the steel industry. She serves as VP of corporate development for ACG Cleveland, is an active Junior Achievement volunteer, and serves on a number of local non-profit boards. In 2004, she received a YWCA Women of Professional Excellence Award. Jack Derby – ACG Boston Vice Chairman, Online Information & Communication President, Derby Management Before forming Derby Management, Jack Derby was CEO of Mayer Electronics, President of CB Sports, President of Litton Industries Medical Systems, CEO of Datamedix Corp., and VP of Becton Dickinson Medical Systems. He was named to Mass High Tech’s All Star Team, and is often quoted or published in highly regarded business publications. Donald J. Feldmann – ACG Greater Cincinnati Vice Chairman, New Chapter Development President and CEO, Winton Associates Inc. Don Feldmann is responsible for advising clients on capital markets transactions. Prior to joining Winton, a broker-dealer affiliate of Rippe & Kingston, he was an executive in the treasury department of Federated Department Stores. After that he joined Gradison & Co. to provide M&A and financing services. Feldmann, involved in many civic activities, is a director of ACG Greater Cincinnati and of USC Solutions. J. Mark Jones – ACG Atlanta Vice Chairman, Private Equity Groups Partner, River Associates Investments LLC Mark Jones assumes primary roles of overseeing the acquisition origination process and managing relationships with investment bankers, M&A intermediaries, and senior and mezzanine financing sources. He serves on the boards of several portfolio companies of River Associates, which has a 15-year/50+ deals/5-fund track record as a private equity partner for management teams in buyout, recapitalization, family succession, and divestiture transactions. He is active in ACG Atlanta. Bailey (Biff) S. Barnard – ACG San Francisco Chapter Representative Director Partner, Wood Warren & Co. Biff Barnard, with more than 25 years of experience in the business, heads Wood Warren’s marketing, business development, and private placement activities. Previously, he was a managing director of Caltius Capital Management and had managed the San Francisco office. Before that, he was SVP of Allied Capital, heading its marketing and business development in the western United States. He served as Chairman, President, and CEO First Capital, a successful small-business lending company. He is past president of ACG San Francisco and the recipient of the chapter’s inaugural Meritorious Service Award and the ACG Meritorious Service Award. Ken Bresnen – ACG Austin Chapter Representative Director Managing Director, Catalyst Group Ken Bresnen is a managing director of Catalyst, an international investment banking and corporate development firm. He has served in senior operational and corporate development roles in several large companies, including Telex, Unit Rig, and Air Products & Chemicals. He has served as CEO, COO, and CFO in early-stage ventures in the computer equipment, software, Internet, and environmental industries and has directed turnarounds in two troubled businesses. He is Chairman of Trialsmith, a legal information Internet site serving 60,000 attorneys, and President of ACG Austin. Dino D’Auria – ACG San Francisco Chapter Representative Director Senior VP and Commercial Division Manager, San Diego National Bank Dino D’Auria is responsible for building and developing the commercial, community, and SBA banking departments of the bank. As part of the senior management team of the corporation, the largest community bank in the region, he brings 16 years of experience in San Diego banking to his present position. His prior experience includes banking-related work at Wells Fargo, Comerica/Imperial Bank, Titan Corp., and High Technology Solutions. He is a past president of ACG San Diego and was the former chair of the Junior Achievement board. Scott A. Eisenberg – ACG Detroit Chapter Representative Director Managing Director, Amherst Partners LLC Scott Eisenberg is a co-founder of Amherst Partners who advises companies on M&A and related activities. He has worked on more than 50 investment banking deals and advised 100-plus companies on business plans, projections, and other financial matters. He has managed multiple transactions with public companies and has been an expert witness. Harald Klien – ACG Austria Chapter Representative Director Managing Director, CD Invest Consult GmbH Harald Klien founded CD Invest Consult, a consulting and direct investment firm for international clients in Central Europe.
