Advent International – Global PE group Advent beefed up its North American team with the addition of six new hires: Jeff Case and John Maldonado, principals, and David Chen, Bryan Doherty, Kevin McQuarrie, and Thomas Weisman, associates. Alvarez & Marsal – Joining Alvarez & Marsal Transaction Advisory Group in Chicago are Michael Gacek, formerly of Deloitte & Touche, as a director, and Brandon Crawley, formerly of Pricewat-erhouseCoopers, as an associate. Joining the group in New York are Kevin Karl, formerly of Pricewaterhouse-Coopers, as a manager, and Scott Francis and Ryan Rockwood, both formerly of KPMG, as associates. Alvarez & Marsal Tax Advisory Services in New York welcomed M&A tax advisers Lauren Byrne, formerly of Ernst & Young, and Martin Williams, formerly of PWC. Both are senior directors. Gacek provides buy-side financial due diligence services to PE investors. Before joining A&M, he had been a senior manager in the M&A transaction services practice of Deloitte & Touche. Byrne advises buyers and sellers on the tax aspects of corporate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and spin-offs. Prior to joining the firm, he was a senior manager in Ernst & Young’s transaction advisory services practice. Williams advises investors on the tax aspects of corporate transactions. He had been a senior manager in PWC’s M&A tax practice before this. Baker & McKenzie – Adding to its corporate and securities practice in New York, the firm recruited Jonathan Stapleton as a partner. Stapleton, who joined the firm from Arnold & Porter, focuses on acquisitions, divestitures, and JVs; financings; private investment funds; securities; and general corporate and corporate governance representation. Bank of America – Todd Berman is the company’s new head of media and telecommunications investment banking for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and he is based in London. Before joining the firm, Berman had been head of EMEA communications investment banking at Lehman Brothers. Banc of America Securities – Filip Rensky and Teresa Teague have joined the firm’s financial sponsors group as managing directors, in which capacity they provide M&A advice and financing solutions to PE clients. Rensky joined the firm after spending 16 years at Goldman Sachs, where he most recently focused on providing investment banking coverage across the consumer, industrial, and technology industries. Teague has 13 years of investment banking and finance experience, including 11 years with Goldman Sachs, where she most recently focused on providing investment banking services to financial sponsors. In other news, 17-year Citigroup veteran Tom Ostrander joined the firm’s global industries group as a managing director. He had most recently served as chairman of Citigroup’s global industrial group for North America. BarclaysCapital- Five recent hires significantly augment BarCap’s energy investment banking capabilities: Santino Basile, managing director; Bill Cassidy, director; and John Eleoterio, Juan Kreutz, and Richard Mandery, associate directors, joined in recent weeks. All are based in New York. Basile, who previously had been with WestLB, leads the firm’s advisory efforts for independent power producers, developers, and energy-focused financial sponsors. Cassidy and Mandery had been members of Banc of America Securities’ natural resources group before this. Eleoterio hails from WestLB, where he focused on U.S. independent power producers. Kreutz, also from WestLB, had covered the power and utilities groups and financial sponsors at that firm. Brown Gibbons Lang – Charles “Chip” Wahle has joined the firm as a director. Wahle practices in Boston, where he is opening Brown Gibbons’ newest office. Prior to joining BGL, Wahle held investment banking positions at Barrington Associates, Harris Williams, and Tucker Anthony Sutro (now RBC Capital Markets) as well as corporate finance positions at ABN AMRO. Brown Rudnick Berlack Israels – The firm recently recruited Michael Student as a partner in its corporate and securities department in New York. Student, who had been with Holland & Knight, handles M&A, venture capital, cross-border, and strategic alliance deals. Capitalink – M&A and private placement specialist Renee Grossman is a new member of the firm. She previously had been a managing director of RSG Capital, a New York-based firm she founded that provided M&A and PE placement advisory services to small to mid-market companies. Cowen & Co. – As Greg Malcolm stepped into his new role as executive vice chairman of Cowen, the firm brought in former Credit Suisse M&A head Donald Meltzer to fill Malcolm’s prior role of head of investment banking. Meltzer is based in New York. Meltzer, a Credit Suisse veteran with more than 20 years at the firm, left CSFB in 2004 to join Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, where he most recently served as co-head of investment banking. In other news, Robert Roden joined the firm as a managing director and head of the new leveraged finance group in San Francisco. Roden had served as head of struc-tured/leveraged finance at Merriman Curhan Ford before this. Clayton, Dubilier & Rice – Former Wolseley CEO Charles Banks joined the firm as a partner. He is based in New York. Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton International law firm Cleary Gottlieb recently elected new corporate partners and counsel: Oliver Schroder, partner, joined the firm’s Frankfurt office in 2004. He focuses on corporate and capital markets matters, particularly M&A. Kate Habershon, counsel, joined the firm’s London office in 2003. She specializes in corporate taxation, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and financial products. Tihir Sarkar, a London-based partner, joined the firm in 2003. He concentrates on M&A, JVs, and restructurings. Vladimir Frolov, counsel, joined the firm’s Moscow office in 1994. His practice includes M&A, financings, and other corporate matters. Juan Giraldez, a partner in New York, focuses on international financing and business transactions, including capital markets transactions, mergers and acquisitions, cross-border financings, JVs, and privatizations. Deloitte Financial Advisory Services Moving up the ranks at the firm is Peter Caputo, principal (New York), valuation services. Deutsche Bank – The firm’s new managing director in its Asia M&A group is Jerry Zhang, a former Citic Capital Markets managing director and former Goldman Sachs executive director. DLA Piper US – Joseph Silver has joined the firm’s corporate and securities practice group as a partner in its Atlanta office. Previously, he had been with Kilpatrick Stockton. Silver focuses on representing VC and PE funds and the companies in which they invest and has significant experience in technology M&A and JVs. FTI Consulting – New hire Scott Bingham joined FTI’s corporate finance practice in its transaction advisory services group as a managing director. Atlanta-based Bingham brings more than 14 years of experience to his new position, the last nine of which were spent at PricewaterhouseCoop-ers. Most recently, he served as the advisory practice leader for PWC’s health care transaction consulting group. Fulbright & Jaworski – The law firm beefed up its presence in Asia by opening a new office in Beijing, which provides cross-border deal, energy, and project finance services. Jeffrey Blount, co-head of Fulbright’s international department who has worked in the firm’s Hong Kong office since the early 1990s, serves as chief representative and partner-in-charge of the new office, although he continues to serve as partner-in-charge of the firm’s Hong Kong office as well. In addition to Blount and other attorneys in the firm’s China practice group, Fulbright partner Michael Arruda, who leads the firm’s energy practice in Asia, will work in the Beijing office and continue to advise the firm’s energy industry clients in Asia. General Atlantic – Former Cadence Design Systems senior executive H. Raymond Bingham joined this PE firm as a managing director and head of its Palo Alto office. Bingham most recently had served as executive chairman of the software company. Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher – Dorothee Fischer-Appelt joined the firm’s London office as a capital markets partner in the corporate transactions practice group. Fischer-Appelt joined the firm from Allen & Overy’s London office and continues to focus her practice on M&A and capital markets deals. Greenberg Traurig – Daniel Raglan is the newest shareholder in the firm’s corporate and securities department in New York. Raglan, who focuses on M&A, corporate finance, and capital markets, joined from Sullivan & Cromwell. Haynes & Boone – Five newly hired senior attorneys who previously had been with Olshan Grundman Frome Rosenzweig & Wolosky significantly boost the law firm’s corporate/securities practice group in New York. Harvey Kesner, a partner who leads the firm’s new business and securities regulation group and focuses on complex domestic and international transactions, had spent several years in Washington, D.C., where he was a senior attorney in the corporation finance division of the SEC. Benjamin Reichel, partner, is a specialist in M&A, corporate securities, venture capital, and general company representation. Nancy Brenner, of counsel, focuses on general corporate matters, including securities and transactional cases. Gregory Kramer, a corporate securities associate, has broad experience in SEC compliance matters and in M&A, including reverse mergers and PIPE transactions. Rick Werner, associate, represents companies in general corporate matters. International Network of M&A Partners – IMAP, the global partnership of M&A advisory firms, elected a new president – Karl Fesenmeyer, who also heads up M&A Consultants AG in Germany. Jones Day – Prominent PE lawyer Dennis Barsky recently joined the New York office of the firm as a partner. He formerly was a partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, where from 2002 to 2004 he worked on cross-border deals from Singapore. Another PE deals lawyer, Robert Kennedy, also bolsters the firm’s New York office. The former Latham & Watkins partner joined Jones Day as a partner. In other news, IP attorney Warren Nachlis joined the New York office of Jones Day as a partner. He specializes in technology licensing agreements, joint ventures, and technology-oriented corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions. Before this, he had been a partner at Shearman & Sterling. Also, former P&G global legal head Robert Miller joined the firm’s Columbus, Ohio, office as a partner in the general business practice, focusing on cross-border transactions and corporate governance. KPMG Corporate Finance – Peter Gray has joined the firm’s New York office as a managing director and head of its energy and natural resources team. Gray is building a team responsible for providing advisory services for oil and gas, power and utilities, mining and metals, forestry, and alternative energy companies. Prior to joining KPMG, Gray was a director and head of natural resources-New York at ANZ Investment Bank. Latham & Watkins – A number of associates in Latham & Watkins’ corporate practice will join the firm’s partnership, effective January 1: Luke Bergstrom (Silicon Valley) focuses on M&A. David Brown (Washington, D.C.) concentrates on M&A and general public-company representation. Brett Cassidy (London) represents investment banks and PE clients in cross-border capital markets and leveraged finance transactions. John Giouroukakis (New York) specializes in M&A and general company representation. Olivia Rauch-Ravise (Paris) concentrates on transactional matters such as private equity, M&A, and cross-border tax matters. Lazard – The new chairman of the firm’s Chicago office is Jonathan Ward, who also serves as a managing director in investment banking. Ward had spent the past five years at ServiceMaster, where he joined as president and CEO and was named chairman in 2002. Before joining that company in 2001, he spent 22 years at R.R. Donnelley & Sons, most recently as president and COO. Also, in a push to strengthen its German investment banking team, Lazard lured Andreas Schreiber and Dr. Sven Helmer from rival banks. Dr. Helmer, former head of real estate investment banking at Sal Oppenheim, joined Lazard as a director its real estate investment banking team in Frankfurt. Schreiber will join the firm from UBS in January as a managing director of the financial institutions group in Germany. At UBS, he had been executive director and headed the investment banking business for financial institutions in Germany. Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw – Sarbanes-Oxley expert Eric John Finseth joined the firm from the SEC as a corporate and securities partner in its Palo Alto, Calif., office. At the SEC, Finseth served as an attorney fellow in the corporation finance division of the office of chief counsel. Prior to joining the SEC, Finseth had been a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati who focused on M&A, venture capital fund formation, public equity offerings, and debt offerings. Medical Capital Advisors – Specialized investment banking firm Medical Capital added veteran industry executive John Rogers as managing director of its medical technology investment banking team. Most recently, Rogers served as a senior banker at Brown Brothers Harriman. J.P. Morgan Chase – The firm recruited Lars Ingemarsson as a managing director in its Nordic investment banking division. Previously, Ingemarsson spent 10 years with Merrill Lynch and was responsible for the European chemicals and forest products teams. Morgenthaler – Mid-market buyout firm Morgenthaler promoted senior associate Joe Machado to principal of its buyout team. Machado joined the firm’s Boston office in 2005. Prior to joining Morgenthaler, he served as an associate at American Capital Strategies and Thayer Capital Partners. Mosaic Capital- Mid-market investment banking firm Mosaic has recruited two seasoned bankers to its West Los Angeles office. Mark Ross, formerly a managing director of Chatsworth Securities in Greenwich, Conn., joined as a managing director. He specializes in technology, infrastructure, and Internet-based companies. Robert Whyte, also a managing director, enhances Mosaic’s media and entertainment investment banking capabilities. Before this, he had been a managing director and head of the Los Angeles office of Morgan Joseph. North American Capital Markets This banking-industry-focused investment bank recruited Brian Kaufman as a managing director in its new Summit, N.J., office. Before this, Kaufman had served as senior strategist and co-head of Milestone Advisor’s banking division. Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker – Basil Hwang, previously with the Hong Kong office of O’Melveny & Meyers, joined the firm’s corporate department as a partner, based in Hong Kong. He focuses on M&A, PE transactions, and securities offerings. Perella Weinberg Partners – Boutique investment bank Perella Weinberg, which was formed in June, recruited Ron Tysoe as a senior adviser in New York. Tysoe had been vice chairman of Federated Department Stores for nearly 17 years. Posternak Blankstein & Lund – The firm welcomed David Barbash from Nixon Peabody as a partner in its corporate department in Boston. Barbash handles M&A, strategic alliances, public and private financings, and loan transactions. RBC Capital Markets – Moving up the ranks at the firm is Peter de Vos, who recently was elevated from head of corporate finance to head of U.S. investment banking. de Vos joined RBC Capital Markets in 2001 upon the firm’s acquisition of Dain Rauscher, where had served as head of corporate finance. Sidley Austin – Clifford Chance M&A partner Georg Rutzel decided to join Sidley Austin as a partner in its corporate practice. Based in Frankfurt, Dr. Rutzel’s practice focuses on M&A deals. Sidley Austin launched its German operations last March, and Rutzel is the firm’s third Frankfurt partner. Vector Capital – Technology-oriented PE firm Vector recently added David Fishman, principal, and Elizabeth Katz, VP, to its investing team. Prior to joining Vector, Fishman spent 10 years at Goldman Sachs, where he had been a managing director in the M&A group, focusing on technology and media deals. Katz previously served as director of corporate business development at PeopleSoft, in which capacity she was responsible for M&A and equity investments. White & Case – Strengthening its corporate practice, the firm is hiring two partners and an associate from Clifford Chance. Jorg Kraffel, former head of Clifford Chance’s Berlin office, covers M&A, restructuring, and privatizations.
