Even if M&A dollar volume lightened slightly from the AOL-heavy first quarter, word on the Street is that in the back half of 2000, transactions will regain momentum. This quarter deals slid 46% in value to $324 billion, from $551 billion in the first quarter, and the number of deals fell to 2,055 from 2,725, according to Thomson Financial Securities Data. But the atmosphere for transactions is still charged, as first half numbers beat out last year’s by nearly 5%, $894 billion to $853 billion.
