The Castle Harlan family tree just sprouted a new branch, as Joshua Harlan, the son of firm co-founder Leonard Harlan, has launched a new fund.

The vehicle, Harlan Special Opportunities Fund, LP, submitted a Form D filing on May 16, but did not specify a target. The new firm, Harlan Capital, has yet to line up any commitments.

Harlan was formerly a portfolio manager for the $12 billion OPTrust, based in Toronto. His new firm shares the same New York address as Castle Harlan, at 150 E. 58th Street.

Harlan Capital is not the first offshoot to share bloodlines with Castle Harlan's founders. Branford Castle, a small-market shop that holds assets longer than traditional private equity firms, is currently led by John S. Castle. Castle Harlan co-founder John K. Castle launched the firm in 1986.

A call to Joshua Harlan was not immediately returned by press time.
