Highlighted by the Tribune Co. and Times Mirror Co. merger, M&A activity in the newspaper publishing sector is growing. That was evidenced two weeks ago by the $2.44 billion sale of Central Newspapers Inc. to Gannett Co. With the transaction value of announced deals in 2000 triple what it was in all of 1999, one analyst, who wished to remain anonymous, said she expects more deals, such as Chicago-based Hollinger International Inc., which is looking to divest its U.S. regional and community newspapers.
