This past weekend we celebrated the free-and-easy holiday of Cinco de Mayo, which commemorates the victory of Mexican forces over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Although the Mexican army was eventually defeated, the skirmish came to represent a symbol of patriotism and unity. With this victory, our southerly neighbor demonstrated that is was willing to defend itself against foreign intervention.
