Takeout multiples paid for National Basketball Association teams have bounced within a fairly tight range in the last decade, and observers said they will either stay flat or inch down in the near term. Since 2000, buyers paid, on average, $255 million and 3.8 times sales. (Almost all professional sports teams are privately held and therefore most multiples mentioned in this article are estimates.) From 1995 to 1999, by contrast, the average deal price was $137 million with a multiple of three times sales, according to data compiled by Moag & Co.
