December 2005 saw the debut of the Dallas Business Journal Mergers and Acquisition Awards, honoring the dealmakers of North Texas. An idea spawned by Publisher Huntley Paton, shaped by local ACG Dallas/Fort Worth member Roger Hendren of RSM McGladrey, Inc. and in partnership with ACG Dallas/Fort Worth, the event recognized multiple contributions made to the economy by the M&A community. More than 250 people attended. “The M&A community encompasses investment bankers, entrepreneurs, financiers, lawyers, corporate executives and many others,” commented Paton. “What most seem to have in common is that their contributions to the community may be ignored when deals are announced. I hope you enjoy our M&A Awards and, that, like me, you develop a new appreciation for the men and women who, deal by deal, make the North Texas economy stronger.” Judges included Hendren and VP Awards and Sponsorships, David Fuller of VALUE, Inc. Also involved in the program were Ralph Muse, Muse Consulting and ACG Dallas/Fort Worth President; Jim Nadeau of Executives Unlimited, Inc., and ACG Dallas/Fort Worth Past-President; Brad Purifoy, Corporate Finance Associates, and VP Corporate Affairs; Mark Champion, CIT and another Past-President; Joe Ethridge, Sammons Enterprises and the chapter’s Corporate Director; and Tom Phillips, Effective Agreements, Inc., and the chapter’s VP Marketing. Award categories included: Best Initial Public Offering, Best Merger or Strategic Corporate Deal, Best Buyout or Change of Ownership, Best Original Financing or Structuring, Best Corporate Turnaround, and Best Nonprofit Deal. A special section in the Dallas Business Journal featured all winners and provided an update on M&A activity that ranked Texas third highest for deals done in the United States.
