The firm says Bregal Investments CIO Ryan Selwood passed away in Portugal while there with firm CEO Alain Carrier and Delaney Brown, head of capital solutions. The firm says Selwood leaves behind a wife and two children.

Bregal poached Selwood last year from The Carlyle Group (Nasdaq: CG) where he was a partner and chief development officer. As the London-based Bregal’s first CIO, Selwood was tasked with working with senior leadership to define Bregal’s strategy and growth plans.

Bregal said it was managing $16.3 billion in assets when it hired Selwood in March 2023.

Before his 13-month stint at Carlyle, Selwood spent over 15 years at the Toronto-based Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, where he rose to head the fund’s $39 billion private equity portfolio. He also served on the $434 billion fund’s investment committee and spearheaded the acquisitions of Antares, Ascot Group, and Wilton Re.

He got his start in finance as a vice president in Merrill Lynch’s investment banking arm.

“Since joining Bregal in March 2023, Ryan left an indelible mark on our organization and the individuals he worked with,” the firm said in a statement. “Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ryan was a beloved husband, father, and friend.”

Bregal declined to disclose the cause of death.
