American Express has agreed to acquire TheFork from Tripadvisor in a $700 million all-cash deal.

The transaction is expected to close before the end of 2026, with TheFork continuing to operate under its existing leadership team. The acquisition expands American Express’ dining ecosystem and international footprint, while enabling Tripadvisor to sharpen its focus on its experiences-led strategy centered around Viator. The sale follows pressure from activist investor Starboard Value, which last year advocated for a divestiture of TheFork as Tripadvisor sought to improve performance amid intense competition in online travel and hospitality services TheFork is a European restaurant booking and dining management platform that connects millions of diners with more than 50,000 restaurants across 11 countries. The business generated $232 million in revenue for the 12 months ended March 31, representing 25% year-over-year growth. The platform offers restaurant reservations, dining discovery and loyalty services.
