Wind Point Partners will add the pet-product manufacturer Petmate to its portfolio. The firm acquired the company from Westar Capital for an undisclosed amount.

Wind Point generally invests in business services, consumer products, healthcare and industrial products.

Paul Peterson, a principal at Wind Point, called Petmate “a good fit” for the firm’s strategy. He cited the highly fragmented nature of the segment, adding that Petmate, which generates roughly $200 million in sales, already has sufficient scale.

The firm will tap into its 2009-vintage, $915 million Wind Point VII fund. PNC Equity Sponsor Group, Ally Commercial Finance, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Regions Business Capital will provide the senior debt financing. Chase Capital and LBC Credit Partners will provide junior debt.

Once the sale of Petmate is complete, Joe Messner will take over Larry Rembold’s position as Petmate’s CEO. As the former president and CEO of Bushnell Outdoor Products, Messner helped the company grow quickly through acquisitions and product development. Messner and Wind Point intends to do the same for the 50-year-old pet accessory maker.

Add ons will also be part of the strategy. The company is currently in the process of acquiring Bamboo, the pet product unit of Munchkin. The new addition includes pet grooming tools and the Fat Cat brand. Deal terms were undisclosed but Peterson said it came in below $10 million.

Petmate produces more than 4,000 non-consumable durable pet products, which includes pet carriers, collars, feeding systems, toys and pet beds. Its notable brands are Dogzilla, Booda and LeBistro which are sold online, as well as mass and specialty retailers.

Westar’s John Clark, who worked on the deal, declined to comment.
