Private equity firm Versa Capital Management LLC has acquired Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS), an outdoor retailer, for an undisclosed amount.

EMS, headquartered in Peterborough, N.H., operates 69 stores in 12 states. The company was started when two Massachusetts rock climbers decided to open a store that addressed the needs of rock climbers.

Versa won’t consider any major initiatives until after the holiday season, according to Mark Walsh, a Versa principal. Versa will explore opportunities for EMS and Bob’s Stores, also one of its portfolio companies, to collaborate.

The Philadelphia-based firm also owns Bell and Howell, American Laser Skincare and Black Angus Steakhouse.

Duff & Phelps Corp. (NYSE: DUF) acted as EMS’ financial adviser, while Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP acted as its legal adviser. Dechert LLP was Versa’s legal adviser.
