Arlington, Va.-based Rosetta Stone has purchased Livemocha, an online language-learning website for $8.5 million in cash.

Language learning program Rosetta Stone expects the deal to accelerate its transition to cloud-based learning services.

Livemocha, headquartered in Seattle, has more than 16 million members from 195 different countries that use the website to teach, learn and interact online.

Livemocha has raised $14 million in venture capital funding. Maveron, a venture capital firm founded by Starbucks Corp. (Nasdaq: SBUX) founder Howard Schultz, contributed funding.
