Geoffrey O’Malley has joined Dahlman Rose & Co. as a managing director, the New York-based investment bank announced Thursday.

O’Malley will work closely with Dahlman’s investment banking professionals to further develop the firm’s metals and mining practice, with an emphasis on the steel and downstream metal sectors.

"There’s a good level of capital raising and M&A for sure," O'Malley told Mergers & Acquisitions, referring to his niche. "And we have a great team in place here in New York and a terrific platform to work with."

Prior to joining Dahlman, O’Malley, 41, served as CFO of European Metals Recycling Ltd.’s U.S. subsidiary EMR (USA Holdings) LLC where he managed all financial activities in addition to facilitating four acquisitions (two in the Mid-Atlantic, one in the Gulf Coast and another in the upper Midwest).

Before that, he oversaw investment banking in the metals sector at Banc of America Securities LLC, a subsidiary of Bank of America Corp.

Before beginning his career as a member of the Entrepreneurial Services Group at Ernst & Young, O’Malley received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from Georgetown University and Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg School of Management, respectively.

He eventually went on to hold several senior level leadership positions at high-profile financial institutions including Hill Street Capital, CIBC World Markets and Merrill Lynch.

This marks the fifth senior appointment Dahlman has made thus far in 2011. Last month, it snared William Hunter, from Jefferies to be managing director of its mining investment banking. Managing director Rome Arnold was hired in April from Bank of America as head of energy investment banking. Brian Rauscher came aboard in March as chief portfolio strategist, from Fortress Investment Group, and James Crandell joined in February from Barclays Capital as managing director of oil services research.
