John Hancock, a unit of Manulife Financial Corp. (NYSE: MFC, TSX: MFC) is buying Symetra Investment Services for an undisclosed amount.

Bellevue, Wa.-based Symetra, which is being sold by Symetra Financial Corp. (NYSE: SYA), is a broker-dealer and investment advisory firm.

John Hancock, headquartered in Boston, provides life insurance as well as financial products, including 401(k) plans, long-term care insurance, college savings plans and various forms of business insurance.  

Other acquisitions in the broker-dealer space include Cetera Financial Group’s purchase of Tower Square Securities Inc. and Walnut Street Securities, and in October, investment bank MLV & Co.’s acquisition of a 49 percent stake in advisory firm Westport Capital Markets.
