Payment processor Heartland Payment Systems (NYSE: HPY) has acquired MCS Software.

MCS Software, headquartered in Madisonville, La., provides point-of-sale payment services for school cafeterias. The company also develops software that can scan handwritten applications for free and reduced lunches, as well as allow parents to pay online and plan menus.

Princeton, N.J.-based Heartland provides child nutrition and payment management services, including point-of-service terminals, an online payment portal, mobile payment capabilities and other management services, to public and private schools in the U.S.

The deal expands Heartland's position in the K-12 school nutrition and point-of-service technology industry. The company now serves more than 34,000 K-12 schools -- about 35 percent of public schools in the U.S.

Other recent payments acquisitions include Global Payments Inc.'s March deal for Payment Processing Inc. and Excel Corp.'s purchase of Payprotec Oregon LLC, which does business as Securus Payments.
