Private equity-backed EZE Trucking, a logistics provider for the infrastructure, energy and industrial markets, has acquired heavy-haul trucking company Rig Runners Inc. for an undisclosed price.

EZE Trucking, which is owned by Atlantic Street Capital, was acquired in 2009. The deal with Houston-based Rig Runners creates one of the largest national specialty hauling and logistics businesses in the country, according to the release. The combined entity will include 16 terminals, over 700 trailers and 400 power units and drivers.

Rig Runners provides specialized heavy and line haul freight and logistics operations to national energy and industrial customers, primarily in the Texas market.

EZE Trucking operates in the specialized side of the trucking industry, focusing on heavy and over dimensional loads that can exceed legal tonnage, width, height and length and require specialized route planning, permitting and escorts. EZE also provides its customer specialized LTL services in the western U.S. and logistics services across the country and into Canada and Mexico.

EZE expanded its trucking operations with the purchase of Patterson Motor Freight Inc., a specialized trucking company focused on the oil and gas industry, in 2011.

The deal also underscores the heightened land grab of logistics companies, both U.S.-based and abroad. Most recently, GeoPost SA purchased a majority stake in Hong Kong transportation and logistics company Tigers Ltd.

XPO Logistics Inc. (NYSE: XPO), for example, recently picked up 3PD Inc. for $365 million. XPO’s CEO Bradley Jacobs said in a January 2012 video interview that the industry was ripe for consolidation. For more on logistics, see "Logistics, Logistics, Logistics."
