Ametek Inc. (NYSE: AME) is buying Cognex Corp.’s (Nasdaq: CGNX) surface inspection systems division for $160 million.

The Hayward, California-based unit develops and manufactures software-enabled vision systems used to inspect surfaces of process materials for flaws, including metals, paper, nonwovens, plastics and glass. The surface inspections division has annual revenues of $60 million.

Ametek, headquartered in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, will add the business to its electronic instruments group, which designs and manufactures instruments for the process, aerospace, power and industrial markets. Recently, Ametek also acquired Watermill Group-backed Global Tubes, a metal tubing business, for $200 million.

Other recent manufacturing deals have come from Teradyne Inc. (NYSE: TER) which paid $285 million for Universal Robots in May, and Tonka Bay Equity Partners, which bought Seaway Plastics Engineering Inc. in March.
