American CareSource Holdings (Nasdaq: ANCI) is adding to consolidation in the physician group industry with the acquisition of Express Family Care.

Express Family Care operates two physician-owned urgent care centers near Birmingham, Alabama, in Rainbow City and Hueytown. A third center is scheduled to open in Springfield, Alabama in the fourth quarter. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The acquisitions allow Dallas-based American CareSource to enter Alabama. The company continues to look to acquisitions to build up an urgent care platform. In June, American CareSource acquired to health care clinics in Florida that operate under the Bay Walk-In Clinic name.  Before that, in May, the company bought CorrectMed LLC, which operates urgent care centers in Georgia.

Physician group consolidation has been going on for years, spurred in part by the Affordable Care Act, which has brought more patients into the U.S. health care system. For more, see "ACA Reshuffles the Deck."
