Riverside Continues Education M&A Trend with its 300th Acquisition

The private equity firm adds Learning Seat to its more than 30 education companies

Private equity firm the Riverside Co. made its 300th acquisition with its purchase of Learning Seat Pty Ltd., a Melbourne, Australia-based developer of electronic learning courses. The deal is one of the latest transactions in a trend of education M&A this year.

The corporate, healthcare and government sectors use the target’s online compliance and professional development courses.

The Wingate Group served as the company’s investment banker for the deal. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia provided financing for the transaction.

Riverside is a private equity firm that focuses on businesses valued up to $200 million. The company has 33 education and training specialization investments.

Also on Nov. 7, Echo 360 Inc. acquired LectureTools Inc., which makes interactive in-class education tools. On Nov. 6, John Wiley & Sons Inc. (NYSE: JWA, JWB) agreed to acquire Efficient Learning Systems, an electronic learning system provider, for $24 million.

Other recent education M&A deals include Pivotal Group’s purchase of Pan Am Education, Pearson plc’s purchase of EmbanetCompass, and a reported bid from Bain Capital, Cengage Learning Inc. and Apollo Global Management for McGraw Hill Companies Inc.’s education unit.
