Piper Jaffray has hired David Wirdnam as a debt advisor and Matt Traina as head of the firms coverage of west coast financial sponsors.
Wirdnam joins Piper Jaffray from Citigroup, where he was a managing director in the leveraged finance group. There he led corporate financings for a variety of transactions, including acquisitions, leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations and distressed financings. He will be based in New York.
Traina, meanwhile, was most recently a senior member of the financial sponsors group at Banc of America Securities. He will be based in San Francisco.
The new hires follow several rounds of downsizing at the mid-market investment bank. In a first-quarter conference call in April, Piper Jaffray chairman and CEO Andrew Duff hinted that the company would look to make some senior hires.
"The additions would typically be quite senior, principal MD, experienced client relationships that fit in one of our verticals where we have not fully covered some part of the marketplace," he said, according to a transcription of the call found on Thomson One Analytics.
