Mattress Firm Expands with $35M Acquisition

The bedding retailer picked up Mattress Liquidators, which operates stores in Arizona and Colorado

Mattress Firm Holding Corp. (Nasdaq: MFRM) is buying Mattress Liquidators Inc., the operator of Mattress King and BedMart retail stores, for $35 million.

The deal adds about 75 retail stores to Mattress Firm's operations. Mattress King and BedMart each operate a chain of stores in Colorado and Arizona, respectively.

The buyer, headquartered in Houston, expects the deal to allow it to expand in the Denver, Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz. markets. Mattress Firm sells bedding, mattresses, accessories and related products through more than 1,400 stores in 33 states.

Other recent retail deals include DSW Inc.'s (NYSE: DSW) purchase of a stake in Town Shoes, which operates more than 180 stores, for about $62 million, and Signet Jewelers Ltd.'s (NYSE: SIG) deal for Zale Corp. (NYSE: ZLC) for $690 million.
