Days After Tumblr Deal, Yahoo Buys PlayerScale

PlayerScale produces gaming infrastructure used by developers to build games

Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) has picked up PlayerScale, a gaming framework developer, following its Tumblr Inc. acquisition on May 20.

PlayerScale’s services aim to help developers build games. The company, which was founded in 2011, helps develop games played by more than 150 million people worldwide. PlayerScale’s CEO, Jesper Jensen, has started other companies, including Super Computer International Inc., which develops video gaming systems, and was acquired by Electronic Arts Inc. in 2007.

Yahoo’s backing should allow Belmont, Calif.-based PlayerScale to develop new products more quickly and improve its services, the company said on its website. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The deal is in line with Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer’s strategy of picking up startups. The company bought blogging service Tumblr in its biggest purchase since 2003 for $1.1 billion. Under Mayer’s leadership, the company has mainly focused on smaller buys, such as Summly, a news sharing application, and Jybe, an application services provider.
