Barclays Names European M&A Co-Heads

Matthew Ponsonby and Mark Warham arrive from Citigroup and Morgan Stanley, respectively.

Barclays Capital on Thursday named Matthew Ponsonby and Mark Warham co-heads of mergers and acquisitions in Europe as part of an expansion of its investment banking and equities business globally.

Ponsonby was most recently global co-head of infrastructure investment banking at Citigroup, where he worked for 11 years. Warham comes from Morgan Stanley, where he was chairman of UK investment banking and formerly head of UK M&A. In 2006 and 2007, Warham was a director general for the Takeover Panel, an independent body that regulates mergers and takeovers in the U.K.

Ponsonby and Warham will be based in London. They will report to Paul Parker, global head of M&A, in New York, and John Winter, head of EMEA investment banking, in London.

Since its purchase of Lehman Brothers' investment bank out of bankruptcy court last year, Barclays has pushed hard to expand its presence in mergers and acquisitions. Some transactions the British banking firm has had a hand in include Pfizer's $64.5 billion purchase of Wyeth and Verizon's merger with Frontier Communications.
