Advent Taps Ming As Operating Partner

Advent brings former Old Navy retail chain president aboard to assist with apparel retail investment focus.

Advent International, the Boston private equity firm, said Monday that it has appointed former Old Navy president Jenny Ming to serve as an operating partner in its apparel retail investment group.

Ming will work closely with Advent's deal team in Boston, where she'll assist with deal sourcing and other investment-related activities.

Advent managing partner David Mussafer said Ming brings more than two decades of experience working at a leading retail chain. "Her extensive retail knowledge and ability to develop a talented team will be a tremendous asset as we collaborate to grow the Advent retail portfolio."

Advent’s portfolio of holdings in retail spans a range of businesses from specialty retail to direct marketing as well as duty-free and online businesses. It has invested in French retailer Gérard Darel, which the firm backed in June, Hudson News and Brazilian restaurant chain Viena, among a wide variety of other retail companies.

Prior to joining Advent as one of 50 senior industry executives who belong to the firm’s operating partner program, Ming was president of Old Navy for more than seven years, overseeing the retail operations for more than 950 stores across North America. Before being named president of the Gap division, Ming was executive vice president of merchandising at Old Navy, where she was responsible for the chain’s store design, visual merchandising, planning and distribution.

Ming, part of the management team that launched Old Navy in 1994, began her career with Gap in 1986 as a merchandise manager.

Ming sits on the board of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and serves as the vice chair of the Committee of 100, a Chinese-American organization that seeks to strengthen ties between the US and China.
