Filling a SilenceThe worst part about a down market is that the lack of dealflow has made small talk more difficult. In the past, I could always reference a recent transaction or two to fill a silence. Flipping channels: “I’ll never get why they paid so much, but then again I don’t speak Spanish.” Grabbing a beer at Yankee Stadium: “I suppose nine dollars isn’t all that bad if you’re on Goldman’s payroll.” You get the point. Either way, as the deal market has floundered, I’ve had to rely solely on sports and weather to fill in for my passing discourse. Recently, though, M&A has started to make its way back into my regular conversations. The drama at Polaroid, Cisco’s Pure Digital buy, and Platinum Equity’s Union Tribune deal, have all filled some silences in recent weeks. I’m not so sure that my wife or friends would necessarily agree,
but it tells me that M&A is getting interesting again.
